hello from planet everything, now!

some news to report: We started recording our new album "Do It On The Moon" today with Tyler Watkins at Bottom-Touchin' Studios (located on the brown side of the moon AKA Drew's basement). This will be our best album ever. It will be on vinyl. With gorgeous art by Allen Bannister, the guy who assassinated Warhol.

In between finishing this up, we are playing a number of shows that you should check out. Featuring new material and old material.

Also, peep some live videos from last summer's formation here: live @ radio radio.

And of course, some new songs up at Musical Family Tree. Listen now!

love, en!

Here's how to do something awesome: 1. Go HERE. 2. Vote for Everything, Now! 3. Tell everyone you know to do likewise. Maybe call up those people at acorn and get them to help!! Anyone can vote!

We need you now more than ever, online community of fans. If we win this virtual battle of the bands, we will get to play the Broad Ripple Music Fest kick-off show at the Vogue on Oct. 16th in Indianapolis! We've never been popular enough to actually get to play the Vogue, but with your help we can fake it and get a totally sweet show.

As you know, things got rough for E,N! and we're on a bit of a hiatus, or slowdown if you will. But we are going to be playing shows again soon in the Indianapolis area (including a BRMF showcase Oct. 17th at Locals Only)... Playing at the Historic Vogue Theater would be a great way for us to get back in the swing of things. After so many financial disasters and line-up changes, it sure would feel nice to play a great big party like this one!

And if not, well shit. But at least we can all say we tried!

Thanks friends,
Jon/Everything, Now!

August 16, 2009 -
We're on vacation.
Eric has gone to New York.
Justin has gone to Chicago.
Jon has gone to Indianapolis.
Dave is surfing the astral.

We have a lot of things going on right. Exciting things, strange things, big things. First of all, we have had a change of lineup. Dan, our drummer has left the band, so we have spent that last few weeks in our new practice space, reorienting to this new four man line up with half of us switching up for the drumming role. We have been practicing long and hard to get our game face ready for our next tour which is now only two weeks away. We are really excited to be going east again and also down south. We are playing with Casper and the Cookies every night so it should be a really fun tour. We just bought a new van so we will be riding in style. It's very cool and has two VCR's and a few tape decks, so Doog is dreaming of filming and editing new music videos on the road, in the van! Other exciting news: We will have a new and very nice release for this tour. We have rereleased Bible Universe and Ugly Magic as a double disc collectors set with some brand new and beautiful artwork. Crafty hand drew it and it is one of the most beautiful and attactive releases we have put out. You're going to want to buy it even if you already own both these records. We will see you in a few weeks, with a new lineup, an improved sound, and a sweet new keyboard. Till then, love en! xoxo

May 26, 2009 -
We have returned to Indiana from the west coast. The tour was amazing and fun. We had a great time with our old friends Margot and the Nuclear So & So's and we made great new friends, the band Telekinesis. Some tour highlights include, being on the LA News (check the video section), playing (and selling out!) some of the coolest venues in the west, Dave yelling "Grunge Lives" on the streets of Seattle, so much friendly hospitality from all the people that let us stay at their house, enjoying great homemade stew cooked right in the venue everynight courtesy of Doog, mountains!, oceans!, and sitting in a minivan for endless hours having great conversations between 5 great friends. We are taking the next 6 weeks to get 12 new songs ready and then we leave again for a month long tour through the East Coast and the South with Casper and the Cookies. Check out tour highlights in the 2009 photo gallery!

April 27, 2009 -
As we prepare for our Bone-Us Bros. 3D West Coast Tour with Margot and the Nuclear So & So's we have prepared the following for you: new T-Shirt colors and designs at the shows, new Works Cited digital rereleases for free download in the Misc Music section, new 2009 photos and videos and a few old videos, too. We will be posting the dates for our Julyy/Augustust "Endless Recess" East Coast/Southern tour. We have also started working on our next record, the sequel to Spatially Severed, the second in the trilogy, entitled "Do it on the Moon!" We hope to start recording in Augustust. We love you forever.

April 6, 2009 -
We are back from tour with tons of goodies for the website. First off, check out a whole slew of new dates and new tours covering the west coast and midwest. Then feel free to browse the new photos in the 2009 gallery and then check out all the new videos from our latest tour, including an hour long video of the radio show we were on last week. More dates coming soon along with new re-issues, and the last of the Sunshine of Doom and Deadbeats split vinyl for sale at our upcoming shows. Thanks to everyone who made this tour awesome for us. We are just getting started to keep watching this window!

March 26, 2009 -
As we finalize our tour plans and pack up our gear for the Midwest Orbit Tour (starting tomorrow), we have a special video treat to get you in the Everything, Now! mood. Earlier in the week, we recorded a few songs and an interview for a local news outlet. You can watch it as many times as you want by clicking right here. Then after you have gotten burned out on that, come out to one of our midwestern shows, happening every day for the next few weeks. Can't wait to see you. Love EN!

March 16, 2009 -
In case you didn't know, we are on a campaign of digitally re-releasing Everything, Now! related material that is out of print or impossible to find. Last month, we released the CD version of Sunshine of Doom and the Deadbeats Split (both available for free download in the Music section). This month, we have an extra special treat. The album is called "Hope." It is a side project between Jon and Justin from 2005 that was never properly released and not many people have heard it. So I highly recommend you go to the Music Misc. section and download it. I am sure you will be pleasantly suprised. Coming soon: more side project digital re-releases and an extra special edition double disk Everything, Now! re-issue coming in May!

March 12, 2009 -
Great things are afoot. We are making big plans for a West Coast tour in May in support of a new (secret) release. Then in June some smaller jaunts around the Midwest and East Coast. For now, let your eyes gaze on the new dimension we have entered AND help us write and edit our own myth on Wikipedia. Be as creative as you can. We encourage it!

March 9, 2009 -
Check out the new Art section. A gallery of flyers created by our fearless leader, Jon "Ali Baba" David "Crafty" Rogers III! We will see you soon.

March 2, 2009 -
For your listening pleasure, we have added some new goodies to the Music section; rare tracks, live tracks, and tracks from out of print albums. Enjoy!!!

February 27, 2009 -
Check out the new video for Lifting Waits in the video section. It was heavily inspired by a movie being made in our community called Murder Toilet. We are currently preparing for our midwestern tour. Its only three or so weeks away. If you haven't seen the flyer, check it out, it's a work of art. We will be playing some new songs, and some yet unplayed songs from Spatially Severed. We just added all the reviews and interviews that we have accumlated over the years to the Media section of the site. If you are really bored, check out our six year long photo galleries. If you've already done all that, try a backflip onto a horses back. We've got to go get fitted for our all-white suits and make appointments for professionally styled hair cuts! See you there.

February 16, 2009 -
Everything, Now! has completed the Earth tour and WOW! It was a wild trek to new york and back, and it was amazing! We made a lot of new friends, played new songs, tightened into our new permanant lineup, and generally had a great time. I'm so proud of the band for our accomplishments, but none of it would have been possible without all the great people we met, bands we played with, and all the old friends we hadn't seen in so long! Huge thanks to Dan F. at Transpanther Booking for making it our best tour yet (not to mention the van). Also, thanks to everyone we met at the shows, and all the old friends we saw along the way including but not limited to:
(Akron:) Bethany, Matt
(Jamestown:) Jon, Jeff, Labyrinth Press Co., Mojo's, all the wonderful people!
(Scranton:) Brian and Rudy and the other dudes at The Bog
(New Haven/Manchester:) Deric, Andy, Maria, Josh, Abby and friends, The Visitations, BAR (best one ever)
(Boston:) David and Doctors Fox and Polk Records and the whole crew at All Asia
(NYC:) Karin, Wendy, Isaac, James, Jon Daly, Kevin, Phil, Natan, McCutcheon, Tyler, McKenzie from Rosewood Thieves, Piano's for giving us a bonus last minute show! Everybody else we met there...
(Philly:) Arrah, Carl, DJ, Danger Danger Jeff, etc.
If we forgot you, you must be a secret friend who asked us (in a heat of drunken indiscretion) not to mention yr name... Look forward to many more tours this year! Also, check out some live videos that just got pasted at: Laundry Matinee. See you in a month!

February 4, 2009 -
We had another far out show on the Moon two nights ago. We are having some really special photos developed that we will be posting soon. We leave for tour in a few hours and we can't wait to see you all. Say a prayer for our safe travels in the snowy Northeast and let the archangels guide us towards our path of Highest good! Much love... xoxo e,n!

January 30, 2009 -
We have one show in Indiana tomorrow and then on Wedensday, we are on tour. Here is a little of what to expect from Everything Now! this time around: Serious Space Gospel, Four smiling dudes that would love a hug, new van, new t shirts, IN HEAVEN SMOKING TREES, all the best parties that you've ever been to, and a healing musical experience at 11 towns around the East Coast. Unfortunately Dave is not going to be able to make it, so we are traveling light with only one guitar player. We have got it worked out and you are really going to love it, so bring some friends so you can talk about it later. Also, tickets go sale tomorrow for our April 3rd show in Chicago. You can buy tickets online in advance at www.subt.net. Please do! It's after the end of the world, don't you know that yet?

January 22, 2009 -
We have two great shows this weekend. Tonight in Indianapolis, we are headlining The Delicious' CD Release party. Then tomorrow night we are playing in Bloomington at a Chili Cookoff! We are all making our own chili's. Come check it out. Dave is going to make us French style Chili. There are going to be lots of tasty things to try. We just got all our gear revamped from Campus Bob in Muncie (our hero), so everything is sounding extra nice. There will be horns and chili and space drums and wildness and you dont want to miss this kind of party.

January 16, 2009 -
What do you want to happen when you die? Have you thought about this? Not, what do you expect to happen or think will happen, but what do YOU want to happen? Do you want to be united with the glorious love of God or do you want to go to a magical land with rivers of beer and candy plants? Take a minute to give this some thought and hold that thought in your mind and see what happens... Don't forget that Everything, Now is leaving for tour in two weeks and there is a good chance that if you are reading this we will be coming to your area. We will be playing new songs from Spatially Severed and some choice cuts from the old records. We are bringing new T-Shirts and some freshly drawn copies of Sunshine of Doom on vinyl. See you soon.

January 10, 2009 -
We have been working hard since we got back from tour. Not only do we have a brand new website, but we have some new music videos for songs off of Spatially Severed and more are in the works. We leave for another tour in just a few weeks. We will be playing lots of new songs and some old ones too. We are psyched! We are preparing our uniforms of light and charging up for this next adventure. The angels smile down on us and we beam their cosmic love. Also if you haven't downloaded our free Prequels and Parallels ep, then Click Here!

January 7, 2009 -
We just found out that Spatially Severed has been rated the number 4 album of the year by Nuvo. Here’s what they said: "4. Everything, Now!, Spatially Severed (Musical Family Tree). Like the Nuggets compilations of obscure garage rock bands from the '60s and '70s, Everything, Now! explores different territory on each track from their new record, managing to sound like — to use some less obscure bands as points of comparison — The Kinks, ? and the Mysterians, Procul Harum, The Who and The Bonzo Dog Band before they're through. The thing about those collections is that rabid collectors sifted through a lot of dross to find songs with decent hooks and an ineffable (and irreproducible) energy. That E, N! can construct this kind of pastiche all by themselves and leave very few throwaways is all the more impressive."

January 6, 2008 -
You can check out an interview with our singer Ali Baba on the Architects and Heroes webzine. Read it here: http://architectheroes.blogspot.com/2009/01/7-questions-with-everything-now.html

This is the beginning of a new age for Everything, Now! 2009 marks the beginning of our conquest to take bake the radio, take back the TV, take back the internet. We are really serious. We hold a message, a vibration, a light and we have strong intentions to let it grow through whatever medium we can get our hands on. This is the year of expansion, of growth, of love. This is the year we bring the light to the people. And so it is.

April 1, 2008 -
Eric has left the state for a long while to persure matters of spirit. We have brought in David Pierre Carter to play the bass. He just moved to the US from France and is very excited to raise his crown to the level that Everything, Now! is working on.

March 12, 2008 -
We just got back from the first meeting with our lawyer. We can't really say much about it on here, but if it works out for us, this could be a great financial opportunity for the band.

December 20, 2007-
Everything, Now! has run into a very interesting legal situation involving government officials and the set of a porn movie. It's looking like we are running up against a few months worth of dealing with lawyers, but we just might end up ahead here.

December 09, 2007-
2007 into 2008. I know that I speak for everyone when I say 2007 was a pretty good year. We had some fantastic shows, the best tours so far, played with some great bands (man man, starlight mints, elf power, mouser/col. knowledge/any band mercer is in, countless deadbeats/en! party-shows...), and released 2 full-lengths, both of which we hand-painted and assembled (which takes one metric ass-load of hours).

But what about 2008, y'all? Well we have some plans. or planz. plan Z.
-we're heading back into the studio very shortly and will emerge with an as-of-yet untitled LP. or even a 2xLP. to be released on No Record Label, which will become a real imprint this year. though we have no shows scheduled at the time, we did road test 4 of them last night to a positive reaction. tours will follow later next year, though since we currently have no van, i can't give a timetable on this, either.
-we should be announcing a new, 5th member of the band, likely at our next show.
-and on a personal (label) note, i'm hoping to release some stuff from the archives on our imprint, namely the Works Cited full-length, and possibly a Sunshine of Doom-related release once the vinyl goes OOP (which it is nearly).

November 08, 2007-

Ring the bell! Light the fire! Poison your enemies with LSD (why not? the government already does it)! Turn off your cell phone and smash your i-pod! Slap old people around! It's time to change your mind and possibly the world.

Ugly Magic is here. Ugly magic is a bit queer. And we're giving you a few days to get used to it before its official release on September 14th!!! Every day or so, we're posting another track from the album on our myspace page. So don't miss it.

Let's wake up the piece (peace?) that disappeared some time ago.

October 27, 2006 -
Your Mother Should Know... No shows lately, but plenty of news.

"Sunshine of Doom" is available now from St. Ives Records! It's a limited edition vinyl pressing of our first album, and each of the 300 copies is lovingly hand decorated. Apparently, they're selling fast, so call your local record store and demand it now, before they're all gone. Tell them it's available through Secretly Canadian Distribution (they'll know who you're talking about).

The split LP with Everthus.The.Deadbeats is pressed and ready to go. Well, almost. The last report from Standard Recordings was that they're still waiting for the vinyl sleeves to come back from the printers. But it'll be worth the wait. Three brand new recordings from us as well as three of the best selections from the Deadbeat's dazzling debut, "Addicts Stuck in Traffic." And the art looks great!

We will have a song on Standard Recordings' Christmas compilation (I think it's called "A very Standard Christmas" or something...) This will be very limited edition too, and features everyone on Standard's roster (and a few more), so seek that one out! Our song is called "Jesus Christ / Nuclear War" and it's co-written by me and Sun Ra and Alex Chilton!

In case you didn't know, our new full-length, BIBLE UNIVERSE will be finished sometime in January, and will be out very shortly afterwards. And since you have all been so good, and waited so patiently since Police, Police!, there is a special bonus. A couple months after Bible Universe comes out, we will be finishing up our FOURTH album, Ugly Magic. Can you feel the excitement?!?

February 03, 2006 -
Possibly the coolest guy we know wrote a killer article about us in Nuvo. It's only taken three years for a peice of journalism this informative to reach the public! Thank you Jason at Luna! http://www.nuvo.net/archive/2006/02/01/legalizing_love.html

The Grand Opening's first show was in February 2003 in Muncie, at the old Speakeasy, with In the Face of War and Baby's Revenge. The show featured a large purple octopus and a banner with the band's name.

Crafty starts to record Sunshine of Doom with help from the band and others.

"The Grand Opening" changes their name to "Everything, Now!" Drew is invited to be a part of "Everything, Now!" Crafty finishes Sunshine of Doom, which is self-released in December 2003.

Crafty begins to write what will be Police, Police!. Standard Recording Company digs the live show after seeing the band for the first time in January 2004 in a sweaty Muncie basement. Crafty starts to record Police, Police! with Tyler Watkins, the band, and others.

E,N! signs a recording contract with Standard outside of Radio Radio in Indianapolis in June 2004.

E,N! goes on their first fake tour to Toledo, Toronto, Chicago, and Champaign.

Ben quits the band to pursue In the Face of War, and foster his love for Avril Lavigne.

Justin and Cheek are invited to be a part of Everything, Now! Both played their first show in September 2004 in Terre Haute. E,N! goes on its second fake world tour, hitting Terre Haute and Bloomington.

Crafty finishes Police, Police! E,N! goes on its third fake world tour "Third World Countries Tour."

January 25th, 2005 -- Standard releases Police, Police!. Everyone's face gets rocked off at release shows in Indy and Muncie.

Justin quits and moves to Connecticut to take up bow-hunting and continue his shower-less streak.

Doog joins just in time for the 4th fake, 1st real world tour. E,N! tours 10 cities in 12 days, including: breaking the floor of a house, leaving a trailer door open, playing to 3 people, rocking NYC twice, videotaping two wasted dudes in Nashville, playing in an Athens backyard, eating one large cardboard box full of candy, and returning home with one more person than they left with.

Rob leaves the band to move to San Fran, which is completely unrelated to his not-so-recent development of an ass-scab.

Police, Police! charts on the CMJ Top 200, peaking at ..197 (above the Oasis single). Doog leaves the band. Justin, Thomas, and Castle agree to join for the upcoming SUMMER 2K5 TOUR.

Thomas decides he can't tour due to an incident involving Night Train, and Dan leaves the band later the same evening to pursue a possible job on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Castle leaves the tour to run with wild stallions in Kentucky.

John and Will join the band for the Summer Tour, and Doog joins for the East Coast Dates, which are cut short by a bad transmission.

In the fall of 2005, Richard joins the band on bass, and in the Spring of 2006, Justin re-joins as a jack-of-all-trades. After the "Spring Baked 2006" Spring Tour, Jared leaves the band in pursuit of the Guinness Record for Largest Eggplant Garden, and to perfect is Apple Cider-Peanut Butter-Chili. Justin and Dave Segedy both join to fill his old man shoes, then Dan re-joins on third guitar and trombone.

On April 11, 2006, Police, Police! is re-released nationwide through NAIL Distribution.

In June 2006, the band saddled up with a van, trailer, and seven members, for their first cross-country tour. They played at least 25 shows in close to that many states, slept in Wal-Mart parking lots and rest stops, drank the finest brews in Boise, swam in the Pacific, smashed a guitar, and generally blew minds and went completely, utterly broke, almost becoming stranded in the Arizona desert. Somehow, they made it back, and Fall 2006 saw the release of a Split 12" with Everthus the Deadbeats on Standard Recording, and a vinyl re-release of Sunshine of Doom on St. Ives/Secretly Canadian.

Due to money losses and members moving around the state, the band went on hiatus, to re-emerge in early 2007. In the meantime, Justin left the band to get married and bike to Europe and back, while Chad left to pursue a career in the entertainment industry as a James Dean imitator.

April 2007 saw the release of the band's third full-length, Bible Universe, hand-made and self-released. The band toured the South for an extended week in May 2007, the Ghost Ridin' Tour, playing with luminaries like Man Man and Summer Hymns.

Upon their return, work continued on the fourth full-length, Ugly Magic, and Richard left the band in late Julyy to further work on his patented "scroto-tom".

Eric (aka Doog) re-joined the band on bass in the Summer of '07, completing two tours, September's "The End Is Here" jaunt, which saw the band selling their van for $50 in Texas, eatin' shot-dogs, and experimenting with a drum machine. The 4-day Halloween with the Deadbeats involved lots of eye-make-up, robes, and bro-time.

Doog left the band in March of 08 to kick it on the astral plain and was replaced by Dave. The band goes on a few tours through the summer and fall. Then, in October 2008 Doog returned from the astral plane and brought back Justin and a possie of Archangels. Justin replaced Drew, who quit the band and moved to England to start his own brewery with his girlfriend.

Dave started playing second guitar and the five piece went on a short tour with Margot and the Nuclear So & So's. Shortly after, the band begins their Moon Tour of 2009. After the first month of shows on the Moon, the band embarked on the February "Return to Earth Tour." Dave didn't go because he was busy training an army of lightworker children in a secret compound in central Indiana.

March 2005 E,N! Tour Journal -- By Drew Deboy

friday, march 4th - cheek comes and gets me and we roll on over to the 525, where sits our 4-cylinder plymouth voyager mini-van (courtesty of master schlemmer), connected via hitch to one u-haul trailer. rob is loading the rest of the stuff in, and i pile my bags in the back before plucking a wiffle bat out of the trash and playing baseball with an apple swiped from the compost heap. we get everything in, pile in, and head over to pick up erick and his drums. we depart for indy, 7 dudes in a minivan, and a trailer full of gear.

we stop at rob's parents house, where they have some boca burgers, and baked beans waiting for us. rob also picks up the essential snack for the next three days, a decent-sized bag of pistachios, and some girl scout cookies, the latter of which he fails to share despite the repeated begging. its getting dark, and we leave for bloomington. it went fast,,,especially when you think that other than this day, we were never in a car for less than 6 hours.

we get to bloomington, sonny's house, where the show has already started. the vegetables rock the house, and the room is super packed, and the lawn is packed and the kitchen is packed. there are people everywhere, and they flood outside as we start to load-in. we get set up, finally, and start to play "angina pectoris". at this point, the room is super, super crowded. i get through the bell part, and about the third measure through the ending melody and the crowd starts to jump, bounce, dance.....then there is a big "whoomp", and the room dynamics seem to shift. rob, who has been playing on top of his stack, is yelling, "everyone get the fuck outta the room! i'm serious! get the fuck out!" turns out, an already broken floorbeam broke more, and the floor looks a bit like a sinkhole,,about 12 inches deep in the center.

we get everything outside and try to decide what to do. someone mentions a basement 2 or 3 blocks away, and we recruit the crowd to help carry the gear. immediately, a parade of people forms, gets our stuff, and helps carry it to the other house, where we weave our way through an upstairs party to a tiny basement with a tiny stage. we set up, and play FUCKING LOUD, to a crowd that shrunk during the move, but contains many drunk muncie-ites, as well as friends from bloomington and indy, and the standard dudes. the sound is pretty bad but i guess we pounded out the songs. the drunk owner demands one more, and we oblige.

our costumes (worn at almost every show) made their debut in this basement. crafty in a purple shirt covered in names written in glitter paint, jared in a bathrobe and slippers, doog in a dress, me in an incredible hulk costume for 8-year olds, erick in his red velvet suit, and rob in a mask or something. it was a bit awkward unloading through the party upstairs in my tight-ass costume.

we drive the trailer over, load up, and head back to sonny's, where some activities take place in the back, and we listen to this awful white rapper that used to live there in the front room. eventually, everybody crashes in a room full of couches and futons. end of day one.

saturday, march 5th- we wake up and survey the damage from the night before--yes, the floor was still broken. they call their landlord, and make up a story about how it happened. we gather our things, i eat a muffin or two and fill up my water bottle. after getting lost once, and losing jared once or twice, we find a music store, and buy some strings. then, we head out for nashville.

along the way, we stop for gas, and rummage through the trailer for some foodstuffs. 5 minutes after we get back on the interstate, a large truck passes us, wildly gesticulating to something behind us. after a few brain-dead moments,,,we realize he is referring to the u-haul. we pull over, find the door completely open. jared's 4-track recorder/sampler is almost hanging out, and the padlock is sitting, ON THE LIP OF THE TRAILER. nothing fell out, that we know of. crafty lAugusths, everyone yells (nicely) at cheek, and we continue on.

we get to the venue pretty early, and look around. it is fancy, and has several rooms with stages, a skatepark, vastly overpriced coffeeshop, etc. another band arrives, a bunch of 15 & 16 yr old ska dudes in a band called, and i don't kid, OFF-DUTY NINJAS. we scatter more nut-shells around the parking place than a flock of birds, and eventually unload.

the dude at the door gives us some free tickets to the show, so we head out to drive around town and try to give them away. after bringing the “nerding” to Nashville, and rob yelling vulgar things at pedestrians, zach poses as an eastern European in search of “ze American nike shoes”. we try to give away the tickets inside a record store, where the kids there ask us what band we are in, to which we reply “modest mouse.” then the quote of the tour happens.

I am standing at the counter waiting for the rest of the guys, when a large manr resembling a cross between warren sapp and mr. t walks up to the counter, telling the manager, “yeah, I got the new trick daddy cd on reserve” in the biggest, deepest, most booming voice I’ve ever heard. he proceeds to look down at me and say, and I directly quote, “trick daddy is my boy.” everyone repeated this for the duration of the tour, and I took it upon myself to make up new phrases for the man such as “the new trick daddy album is the joint.” of course, then everyone became “my boy” and every good thing became “the joint.” amazed at what has just happened,,,we head back to the venue.

while watching rob gallop around the kids watching the ska band, my cousins and aunt and uncle arrived, soon after which we set up and played. my uncle takes embarrassing pictures of me in costume which will surely make their way into everyone's family album. crafty insults nashvillians several times, and tells the crowd that two dudes in the front that left were "working it out. in the bathroom." some 15 year old girls like us, some others talk about myspace.

we leave for my grandparents, and i get a migraine. rob attempts to back in the driveway, before i convince him to turn around and go in correctly. while trying to turn around, he runs the van off the steep side of the road, so that the van & trailer are across both lanes, on a small stretch of road that is encased by TWO BLIND CURVES. IT IS RURAL TENNESSEE AND MIDNIGHT, PITCH DARK. a guy stops, and assists us slowing other people down. turns out he is from anderson and wants to go to recording school. he probably loved nu-metal,,,but anyways. several times i thought we were going to get hit, and once everyone went running.

after pushing fails to get us back on the road, we knock on the door of the house. then we unhook the trailer, and drag it off to the side. a big dude emerges from the house, chains us to his big ass truck, and pulls the van out. we hook the trailer back up, thank the man, and head the 500 feet back to my grandparents house. total time out on the road? close to an hour.

the band meets my grandpa lee, he tells a story or two, and everyone hits the beds, exhausted. end of day two.

sunday march 6th – we wake up early, but not as early as my grandpa, who was busy preparing enough pancakes to feed a festival of bands. despite us being only seven in number, we managed to consume most of these cakes. along with coffee, orange juice, fruit, and anything else that approached the table. they sent us off with apples, lots of carbonated beverages, and some cookie bars, as well as a story about “mom’s famous peanut butter balls” that was referenced approximately 7.3 times a day for the rest of the tour. the cookie bars did not last too long.

we headed out early as crafty wanted to get to Athens quickly, since that’s his hometown and he hadn’t been home in awhile. we headed south and east for 5 hours or so, and rolled into Athens around 1 or so. at first, we couldn’t get into the house – his mom was cleaning the bathroom while we waited outside for awhile. when we finally did get inside, there was a feast awaiting us – chili (vegetarian and meat), fruit salad, cookies, brownies. oh man. this was the day of food. after eating, doog went to take a nap, while we went to meet some of crafty’s friends, scout out the house show for that night.

we get to his friend’s house, and the girlfriend is the only one home. the stoner friend soon arrives, as does the dude that lives there. the house is a tiny brick deal, with a (once) screened porch on the side, a tiny living room smelling of smoke, and an upstairs where nobody is allowed to go. the backyard is mostly red Georgia soil, punctuated with ivy around the edges, a fire pit, and a couple wooden beams sunk into the soil to create a chin-up bar. the dog, eli, fights Erick and jared, before we freak him out with the camera.

we leave the house and drive around Athens for a few, going downtown to the record-store, then later, looking for Tete (pronounced tay-tay), a teacher crafty had in high-school, a displaced African whose house we found, heard music playing, but got no answer. tete did not make it to the show, though we did listen to his answering machine message and hear from him later that night.

after relaxing back at crafty’s for awhile, probably finishing the cookies, we head back to the house, and unload. we set up in the dusk, in the red dirt of the backyard, as friends and family slowly arrive. we start the fire, and wait on crafty’s brother. a nice girl buys some of us juicy juice. we get halfway through the set when we hear that the cops are on their way, but continue playing till they get there, at the very end of the last song, “I’m a bastard”. the cops tell us to stop, we pack up, and a few of the adults leave. the group remaining splits in two, half heading into the house to partake of doog’s favorite activity, the rest of us grouping around the fire.

some of the favorite stories told include: the guy who’s dad teaches at univ. of Georgia, but believes in, collects evidence of, and writes books about sasquatch. we break a piñata and burn everything but the candy. (okay, some of the candy too.) people tell us about crafty when he was in high school, and short versions of their own lives. a great night.

we headed back to crafty’s, where we showered, then ate (AGAIN) on boca burgers with all the fixings left for us, and anything else we could scavenge. end of day three.

monday march 7th – I woke up early, having slept on an air mattress in the living room with cheek. when I woke up, cheek was about three inches from me, and I was basically off the bed. enough of that, I decided, and get up. crafty’s (jon’s, in Georgia) parents had already left for work, and there was a spread of cereal, cereal bars, pop tarts, and fruit all over the table. I ate some cereal, and moseyed out on the back porch, where it was about 70 degrees already. this would be the last day it was above 30 degrees on tour. rob wakes up, and we think that crafty’s dog has died. however, it was just sleeping soundly. we throw a banana at zack’s face, then Erick, rob, cheek and I headed to the backyard.

crafty’s backyard is completely full of plants and kudzu—what I learned was a vine-type thing that grows like nobody’s business. we clambered down the slope, which eventually ended in a fence, then a 8-foot wide shallow creek with a bamboo forest on the other side. we exit crafty’s yard and walk along the creek. Erick gets the idea to go across, and he disappears from sight while rob films. he emerges naked, except for chuck taylors, dragging a long branch and beating his chest like a caveman. nobody else sees this moment till the tour video is watched.

we pack up, eventually, and head out in no hurry, stopping at taco shack for some amazing good burritos. we drive back to Nashville, where the weather has gotten much colder, and it is raining rather hard. I think on the way into town we stop at a fireworks stand, where zack buys some fireworks, I buy a stewart’s cream soda, and Erick buys a ceramic shot glass that fits over a ceramic frog’s engorged dick. yes. we resist the urge to buy confederate memorabilia.

the venue is a hole in the wall bar called the springwater supper club, and is next door to a walk-up, fenced-in, barbecue joint that has 2 lone picnic tables. inside the bar there are maybe 5 or 6 people, one of whom is a gigantic man, weighing well over 300 or 400 pounds, clad in faded blue overalls, and a white t-shirt. he also has a huge white beard that reaches the middle of his chest. he is watching some unsolved mystery program about aliens on the history channel. I nickname him cletus.

we unload onto a dinky almost-stage, and we know that nobody is going to come see us tonight. except abby, her aunt, Natalie and company, all people from or with Muncie connections. rob and I ask the bartender where a good veggie-friendly place to eat is in the area, and he responds that there aren’t any restaurants nearby. his hoochie-appearing woman-friend says, “why dontcha jus’ git sum fries from mcdonalds next door? yeh, I used to not it meat but thar aint no point to that.” she ends her sentence with a sneer and we leave. sure enough, there are tons of restaurants a three-block drive away, and we find a nice thai place. mmm.

upon returning we journey to the park next door in the pouring rain, to the illuminated by spotlight Parthenon replica, built years ago for some world’s fair or exposition. it is very spooky in the night, and this part of town has clearly gone downhill in the past thirty years.

we get back and rip through a set in front of the four mentioned people, and a couple drunks in the back. after we get done, the two drunk men continuously argue about who is hotter, bo derek or christie brinkley. one keeps insisting that Brinkley is a “wrinkly ass bitch.” he also keeps threatening to “headbutt ya in yer dick” to the other man. they are a riot, and we watch from a distance while we wait on rob’s friend to arrive. while we load, doog magically meets a woman outside the deserted bar, and within 45 seconds he is getting his fix. we pull him away before he gets too loopy, as her name is Diana (doog’s ex’s name), and I fear that will launch doog into a story that takes no less than an hour.

rob’s friend finally returns, and we follow him to a very nice house in the Belmont university area, where we sleep in couches, chairs, and the floor after watching the daily show. end of day four.

Tuesday march 8th – i wake up in a hide-away sleeper next to cheek. i put on my coat and take a walk around outside the house, which has a strange yard, and an even stranger bathroom inside, which is like a closet. i walk down the street and back, and after i breathe deeply a few times, i make my way back inside, where crafty is standing right inside the door. i make a quick food check, decide on nothing, and we begin loading stuff up for what promises to be the longest drive yet. i fill up my water bottle, every one else eventually struggles to wake up, and we pile into the van. nine hours of the smoky mountains, cloudy but not rainy skies, and our minivan coasting down the hills and barely making it back up the next. night has just about fallen by the time we enter Raleigh, north Carolina.

downtown Raleigh at night was a strange place, at least on a Tuesday. it was mostly deserted, except for the odd homeless person or vagrant wandering the streets. we find the venue, a hip joint on the second floor of what must have been an old storage or warehouse building, and unload while parked in the street. the place is decked out in black-painted walls, super tall ceilings, and everything else in the place is red, from the stools to the tables, to the bar, to the couches spread around. giant black curtains (behind which i called annie from, hiding from all the red furniture) hang in front of the huge windows in the back of the place. a small bands-only room has been constructed with two-by-fours and plywood in the back corner, and contains a couch, a stool, and a cooler full of beer. outside that room is a plywood table to set gear on, then a ramp leading to the stage, which is a good 4 feet off the ground. and did i mention a real sound system? pretty swanky.

after loading, we park the van down the street, then hit the Chinese restaurant next door, which is completely deserted save for the old man working the counter. we wait on our food, crafty does his dan impression, and we go back to the venue, where we meet the other bands – spader (dance-rock fronted by a guy who is missing a tooth and is a deadringer for Chuck Norris) and the quarantines (another dance-rock trio). the crowd is about 15 or 20 well-dressed twenty-somethings. the quarantines play first, some delay-heavy dance-tunes, with wandering bass-lines. then we got into costume, and played. ryan came partway-through our set, which was one of our tightest all tour, and the sound was good also. i think they even tried to start the smoke machine. the crowd dug it, but, like usual, we didn’t sell anything. stupid indie kids and their nice expensive clothes. spader played last, some more dance-rock tunes heavy on the guitar solos.

we loaded back up, while crafty waited forever to get paid. the club downstairs opened up, and the doorman made us leave the upstairs place immediately. meanwhile, people keep entering the club while crafty is standing outside, waiting for the owner. while waiting for crafty, zack sets off some firecrackers in the streets. the police do not come.

finally we get paid, and we leave the venue, making our way to ryan’s apartment. in the living room, we put in the world’s worst sci-fi/fantasy movie,,,i can’t even remember the name. we’re all pretty exhausted, so we pass out on the wooden floor and single couch. ryan throws me a sleeping bag and then says, “wait, you better give that one back. you probably don’t want to sleep in that one.” or something to that effect, it was funny. i end up sleeping in a bambi sleeping bag, if i remember correctly, and do not look to see if there is any expensive beer in the fridge. end of day five.

wednesday, march 9 - we wake up really fucking early, and i'm sore cause i slept on a thin sleeping bag on a wooden floor. i use the bathroom, get on ryan's laptop to get some last minute directions, fill the water bottle, and wake everyone else up. it is sunny outside, and beautiful, but chilly. funny because the night before, the neighborhood looked quite spooky. we are in the car by 8 am, i think. crafty drives, and i take the navigator's seat. we listen to some old beatles records. sgt.pepper's i think. everyone else sleeps for the first 4 and a half hours of the drive, which brings us to a gas station in rural virginia.

we pass outside d.c., then continue northwards and west, while the sun continues to lessen, and it gets colder and colder. while driving through maryland, doog wakes up and says, "you know where i've never been before? maryland." i reply, "dude, we're in it right now." he says, "oh. cool!" we drive into pennsylvania, and past pittsburgh, because grove city is real fucking close to ohio.

thirty minutes from our destination, we stop to get gas. it is probably near 7pm, our 11th hour on the road. everyone is antsy. i get us on the wrong turnpike, which adds an additional hour, during which it gets dark, and starts snowing while cheek is driving. we probably roll into grove city college around 8pm, and there is easily 3 or 4 inches of snow on the ground.

the venue is an old oak room filled with highback chairs, old leather couches, tables, fireplaces, and closets recessed into the deep brown wooden walls. next door there is a cold hallway and several large open-air coat closets, and then past that there is a huge green-hued lounge type room in which a bunch of kids are having a praise and worship service. dave has pizza waiting for us, and we just feast. dj's electronic/noise act plays first, and scares some people away.

we roam around campus, which is fucking beautiful. all the doors are huge, and super heavy, being made of solid wood. the architecture is very nice, very classic, very ivy league. it is night, and fresh snow has blanketed the campus. so beautiful. we make it to a student union, where there is a big room of students studying/eating/talking. a staircase with a half-turn has a landing 15 feet above all the kids, so we stride up it, and erick calls for everyone's attention, and announces our rock show, saying we're from indiana, i believe. we probably look like the worst, most poor gang ever. we walk back to the venue, i think peeking in a dorm or two on the way, but not causing any trouble. did throw a few snowballs.

back in the oak room, the crowd has grown to fifty or more, and we change into costumes. rob somehow meets a girl who went to his same high school. a nice acoustic act plays before us, pretty iron & wine type stuff. we play a loud set, made louder by the acoustics of the room, which are actually quite great. karoline gives us cookies and brownies after we get done, neither of which last 36 hours cause they were so damn good, and were in a van with 7 hungry dudes. we also sell the most CDs of all tour at this show, 10 or more maybe, and lots of people help us carry stuff out.

here's where the crazy shit goes down.

we decided to take dj home, which is 2 or so hours away in mcgrawsville, or something like or unlike that. small town. we probably leave around midnight. it starts out fine, us listening to the rocketown bootleg, dj telling stories. then people start falling asleep, and shit gets weird. crafty is wired on energy drinks, and is playing alice coltrane loud. it's still snowing, and is more dark outside than i've ever seen. we drive fast. nobody else is around. we fucking put a hole in the space-time continuum, fuck it was so spooky being in whatever dimension we were in. the amish dimension.

we finally make to dj's, who lives in the basement of his parent's house. we walk in like zombies, and collapse on his cot, chair, lazy-boy, and floor.

thursday, march 10- before day seven even started, there were crazy things happening. in the middle of the night, i was roused from my canyon-deep slumber by jared yelling, "turn on the lights! rob! rob! rob, turn on the lights!" somehow, rob complied, and when the lights were turned on, there is jared, on the cot, and doog is standing over him, his eyes all glazed. i guess he was sleepwalking, and ran into jared, his hands probably hitting jared, and jared thought he was getting murdered in his sleep, by a zombie or something. regardless, we got doog to go back to his sleeping area, and everyone went back to sleep after the incident we later referred to as "the sleep strangling".

we finally do wake up, mostly due to some voices, and me, at least, to dj's dog running over my face, effectively t-bagging me. dj lets us eat some english muffins, and drink coffee and tea, then use his shower. the drain is a bit slow, so by the time jared (he got to go last, despite being almost killed) got to it, it was almost a bath. a bath full of suds, soap, dirt, grime, hair, cloudy water, and the flavor of the road. poor jared. because we slept in, we probably left at 11, though i'm not sure. it became snowy as we crossed through new york and massachusetts, but the country was real beautiful, i thought. the east coast is underrated. we stopped at a gas station sandwich shop, where most people ate. i did not, but did continue the tour-long search for pizzerias (the keebler elf chip product). when we got to boston, the directions were crazy, and we got lost for a bit, ending up in some crowded, ancient neighborhood with lots of snow. we stop to ask a resident, "where is cambridge?" to which they replied, "uh, i don't know." "what direction, man?" "i don't know that either." we finally find the place, and it is fucking freezing. it is a bar in one room, a wood-floored empty room as a venue in the other. it's really empty, cold, and the dude at the door says, "what, YOU LOOKIN FOR JERRY?" and we think he's angry, then we just realize it's how people in bahstan talk. regardless, me and rob and doog leave to search out food, find a fucking great (and pretty cheap) thai place, and feast. it was so good.

back at the venue, they are talking to an insane man known as "elvis" at the bar. he is apparently fucking crazy, and won't shut up. the first band was this awful nu-metal act called mission: control. holy shit. they were watched by 4 girlfriends. the singer looked like charlie brown with waist-long hair, and they were supremely awful. the second band was called....i can't remember. but it was boring indie rock. their bassist did this weird dance, and looked like a tall penis. nobody except me and rob and crafty watched them. SERIOUSLY. THEY HAD NO FANS. then deric and justin and andy and the connecticut crew got there, and watched us play. jerry says, "HEY CAN YOU GUYS TURN THE FUCK DOWN. I MEAN, IF THERE WAS ANYBODY FUCKING HERE, I COULD UNDERSTAND YOU PLAYING THAT FUCKIN' LOUD, BUT THERES FUCKIN NOBODY HERE, SO COULDJA TURN THE FUCK DOWN." so we did, then played a short set. after we finish, jerry says, "HEY LISTEN GUYS, I CANT PAY YA, BUT FUCK, ILL GIVE YA GUYS THIS, ITS JUST AS FUCKIN GOOD, YA KNOW?" he hands us a 24 pack of pbr. we are supposed to follow deric & co. back to connecticut, but they lose us quick in traffic, so we ask a taxi driver the way to I-(whatever) and he says, "sure, i show you secret short-cut." we follow him, and the area gets worse. and worse. and worse. surrounded by warehouses, empty lots, and darkness, he stops, points, and fuck, there is the highway. for a while, we thought he was going to have us killed, or sold into the north atlantic vegetarian sex slave trade.

we get to connecticut really late, they live on the 2nd story of an old house, where there are some nachos, and doog starts listening to the margot record that deric had. he gets really high, and under a blanket, and begins to imagine there's someone in the room with him. he talks to this invisible man for over an hour, by my count. i'm sure he could tell the story better. eventually, i'm allowed to sleep, on the floor, with justin's blanket i think. end of day seven.

Surviving Everything, Now!
One Band’s Troubles in Hard Times
Written by “Speedboat Harvey,” a well-known journalist seeking anonymity

For a journalist in 2009, covering Indianapolis psych-pop quintet Everything, Now! is about as smart as offering drugs to a cop or buying second-hand uranium in the Middle East. Few, if any, noticed the November release of the band’s fifth full-length album Spatially Severed (technically their 71st, if one includes aliases and side projects). But the band has gotten their fair share of attention in the last year: some 1500 lawsuits have been filed against the band, most of which involve a large corporation suing the band as a unit or, in some cases, each individual member.

Considering Everything, Now!’s amazing knack for legal trouble, not to mention the current climate of the U.S. Justice System, I have chosen to write this article anonymously, although it is yet to be determined if any editor will be fearless enough to print it. Even mentioning certain brand names or persons has become grounds for litigation.

“Sprite, Dixie Cup, Serpentine brand Sanitary Swabs, and Do Right Man, the Christian comic book hero, all came after us before the album was even released,” claims Drew Deboy, current accountant and former keyboard player for E, N! “Not long after that it was Taco Bell, Nabisco, Phillip Morris, and all we did was mention those brands on stage.”
These are tough times for everybody, including indie rock musicians, but the corporations seem to be working harder than anyone to fight off the end-of-the-decade economic blues. Murray Shtibrick, Everything, Now!’s New York lawyer, thinks the worst is yet to come.

“Nobody is safe from the attacks of these vicious corporations,” he told me when he agreed to meet for an interview in a darkened Brooklyn alley. “I’ve tried to warn all my clients. You’d think using a copyrighted name in an artistic context would be permissible, but the laws are actually set up so that you can be sued at any time for any reason!” In the words of Paul Simon, “Paranoia strikes deep in the heartland.”

“It’s revenge,” answers E,N! vocalist and primary songwriter Jon Rogers, born Ali Baba Robba, quite possibly an egomaniac, “We got involved in some shady activity, accidentally ran into some jokers named Paulson and Bernanke on a gay porn movie set, where we blackmailed them into giving us some bailout money. When companies started to find out about it, they got pissed. Of course they demonize us, we’ve got all the money they thought they were gonna get.”

“It seemed like a good idea at the time,” says Justin K Prim, the band’s current tambourinist and Idea Man, when asked why the lyrics on Spatially Severed contain so many brand names, “Like cosmic advertising, those names would already be out there, in space, so we just grab ‘em back, like the brand names are just different crayon colors or something for us to draw with.”

Speaking of crayons, Everything, Now! was sued by Crayola in October for describing their music as “Shocking Shrimp Electric Pink,” in a press release, a term which happens to be a registered trademark for a new Crayola color. The band is also being sued by Exavier Wardlaw for using the term “space gospel,” which Wardlaw claims to have invented three years ago, as evidenced on his album Jesus in Outer Space, from which several lines of lyrics on Everything, Now!’s Spatially Severed seem to have been blatantly lifted.

“So they basically steal all this dough from the government, from tax payers, from Wall Street,” professes engineer and Spatially Severed co-producer Tyler Watkins, famous for his work with Weezer and the Insane Clown Posse, “But they didn’t spend it at the studio like you’d expect. They paid me in beans and peyote buttons, and they spent $3 trillion to go on tour of the Moon! No one even lives on the Moon, how can they make any of that money back? Serves them right to get sued.”

Watkins claims that he desperately needs money to help fund a lawsuit in which a tampon company, Queensize Twin Air, is suing Watkins and his business partners for unlawfully using that name (registered by the tampon company in 1982) for their studio, at which Spatially Severed was recorded.

Later this month, the band will appear in court to defend themselves against allegations of a sexual nature from three major labels and six major-indie hybrid subsidiaries. Several band members and associates are laying low, adopting aliases, and wearing elaborate disguises until the trial. Others have gone “clean,” pursuing a righteous path to lessen the impact of whatever sentence may be headed their way at the end of the legal circus.

Everything, Now! drummer and licensed minister, the Reverend Sergeant Daniel Schepper is currently digging tunnels under the fence at the U.S.-Mexico border, for which he is willing to accept the consequences: if cAugustht, he could face a mandatory four years at community college. Bassist and Spiritual Guide Eric Alexander is doing a continuous series of back flips in the air to see how long he can stay in lotus position while spinning. Guitarist and the band’s only native French speaker, David Pierre Carter, has been working on a documentary about a series of mysterious deaths involving a demon-possessed toilet.

“Ya know, it’s like the sixties man,” Carter tells me on the set of Murder Toilet, “Except it’s backwards and upside down. Because, did you know that Bob Dylan met aliens?”
Indeed.

Interested parties can find an extensive list of the lawsuits involving Everything, Now! at the band’s website, www.everythingnowmusic.com or their myspace page, www.myspace.com/everythingnow, where you can also purchase any of their albums or scope out their Moon Tour dates, Earth Tour dates, low-budget videos, and more.

Spatially Severed
11/2008; Holy Infinite Freedom Revival/Musical Family Tree Records

The first of three parts of the story of the intergalactic beings known only as Partlies and Veries. Here, they transmit their tale of seperation, longing, death, martyrdom and eventually freedom. Ali "Jon" Baba was sitting in his one-room house when the beings started talking to him. He got out his quill and started writing. For a week he wrote with no sleep or food until this tale was told. He came out to find his wife, Abi Babi, sitting with a blood stained mouth, holding a half eaten cat. Ali buried the cat while Abi decoded the mystical transmission and regained her sanity. After six months of continuous magick rituals, communication with angels, and powerful sigils, this album is available worldwide, carrying the secret history of an alien species and the story of the future of humanity and its savior: DoRight Man.

Ugly Magic
9/2007; NoRecord Label

In this sequel to Bible Universe, our hero St. Neckbone Backbone has been reborn as the prophet Ugly Magic. He has returned from the seven spheres with messages for humanity. Included here are warnings of the frightening times that are descending on our world. Ugly Magic goes from manic dancing street preacher to ascended master as he travels from land to land, delivering his messages over the music of the local peoples. Reciting tales from his past, divine messages, and psychadelic dreams, his story ends and he has become an old man. He has fulfilled his God-given mission and now spends his days sitting on the back porch, drinking homebrew, and raising his now grown son: DoRight Man.

Police, Police!
1/2005; Standard Recording Co.

In the early 21st century, when the lands were riddled with corruption and the police had taken away the rights of Free Men, one group of freedom fighters tells us of their experience. After spending years constructing a rocket in their yard from spare bicycle parts and gunpowder salvaged from stolen police revolvers, they are able to escape their gloomy fate. Armed with intelligent minds, sharp wit, bold hearts, and a deep anger, they leave behind their lives of trailer park demons and rituals, of government genocide and of filthy Sunday afternoon baths. As they make their way through the stratosphere, their makeshift ship explodes leaving only one survivor; Crafty Jonson. As he continues his journey without his companions, the angels whisper a divine plan into his ear. He experiences a vision of his future and the future of his kind. In accordance with the plan, he wonders into a small town where no one knows his name. He is now known only as Neckbone.

Sunshine of Doom
11/2003; NoRecord Label CD
10/2006; Secretly Canadian/St. Ives 12" LP

Crafty Jonson came to the midwest in early 2003. He assembled a ragtag group of Free Men, equipped with primitive amplification systems. They ate out of dumpsters and lived in shantees. They got together every week to make sounds and help them release the tension that had been building on their shoulders throughout their lives. They screamed and shouted. They howled. They sang of their love and their sadness. A small spark was growing. The other Free Men could see something changing in this group. A new spark could be seen in their eyes. A new foundation. The fire of passion was growing in their hearts. And they were dreaming of an escape...
